Do you ever stop to think “How stressful can it really be to run a business from home and be a mom?” “Why are the products so expensive?” Some may say “Well, she doesn't have to rent a space or pay for help so it really can't be all that bad.” “Can't she just get her stuff from overseas and sell it cheap?” “Doesn't she have a nanny to watch the kid?” Let me stop you there.
Building a business from the ground up, raising a kid and having housework to do is not a walk in the park, it's more like Jurassic Park if you ask me. Now, with the added pressure of school being virtual (in my case) and having everyone home, things have become quite difficult to say the least, and expensive!
Let me break down the approximate overhead:
Yes, each business is different and we all get our supplies from different places but this is about what it's like each month. If there are businesses out there without all the above, then their costs will be significantly less and if those other businesses get their things from overseas, of course their products will be on the less expensive side. But then the doubts roll in.
“Should I sell myself short because XYZ sells the same thing for $XX?” “How can anyone run a profitable business by offering such low prices?” This is what separates the girls from the woman. If you're in it to make a quick buck, then you shouldn't own a business. Time is also quite valuable, especially if you don't have a lot of it.
“My Zoom isn't working!” is the one phrase that make my skin crawl these days. I hear it at least a dozen, if not more, times a day. I have to stop what I'm doing, go figure out why the class won't load, and by the time I reach the bottom step I hear “it's still not working!” ::Insert choice words here:: All the stop and go while trying to make products, work on a website, fit in some marketing, makes it near impossible, but I get it accomplished. After all is said and done, I remember that my time and value do matter and my business reflects that.
My promise as a small business mama: I will never sell you junk, I will only provide high quality products and services.
